Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds

The Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds collection features lab-grown diamonds that are made using only renewable energy and set in 100% recycled silver and gold(1).

What are lab-grown diamonds?

The diamonds in the Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds collection are grown in a lab. They are optically, chemically, thermally, and physically identical to mined diamonds but created above ground. And we know the origin of every single one. They are a remarkable example of how innovation can replicate nature’s process.

Pandora’s lab-grown diamonds are grown using the Chemical Vapor Deposition technology (CVD) that results in a diamond rough. The rough diamond is cut and polished into unique, individual diamonds the same way that diamonds have always been cut and polished.

(1) Since August 2022, all Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds have been grown, cut and polished using 100% renewable energy and set in 100% recycled silver and gold. Pandora Infinite pieces crafted prior to this date are still sold in the United Kingdom and Australia. The lab-grown diamonds in these pieces were grown using more than 60% renewable energy on average and set in a mix of recycled and non-recycled silver and gold.

The making of Pandora Lab-Grown Diamond

How does the Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds collection have a lower environmental impact?

Renewable energy used to make the lab-grown diamonds

Our lab-grown diamonds are grown, cut and polished using 100% renewable energy. As a result, a finished white Pandora Lab-Grown Diamond has roughly 9.17 kg of carbon emissions per cut and polished carat. This means its carbon footprint is around 95% lower than that of a mined diamond of the same size.

Recycled silver and gold

The lab-grown diamonds are set in jewellery that are crafted using 100% recycled silver and gold. This is a landmark achievement for Pandora, making Pandora Lab-Grown Diamond the first collection crafted with 100% recycled precious metals: silver and gold. We are committed to purchasing only recycled silver and gold for the crafting of all our jewellery by 2025.

The carbon footprint

Because we only use renewable energy and recycled metals, we manage to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Pandora Lab-Grown Diamonds collection. For example, the carbon footprint of one of our (Infinite) flagship products, a gold ring with a 1 carat diamond, is just 11.4 kg, which is similar to a pair of jeans. For further details on our carbon footprint assessment read here.

The lab-grown diamonds point to a future of low-carbon jewellery. For perspective, if all diamond roughs were mined with the same low carbon footprint as a Pandora Lab-Grown Diamond, it would save more than 6 million tons of CO2e annually (according to S&P Global and Natural Diamond Council) – this is similar to replacing all cars in New York City with electric vehicles (according to EPAFHWA and DMV).
